Behaviour

NORION helps promote sustainable behaviour among citizens, users, customers and employees.

We know that there is often a difference between what people say and what they actually do in practice. This understanding is our starting point when we work to promote sustainable behaviour. We combine different methods to create actionable insights into people's attitudes and actions. This enables us to develop targeted solutions that contribute to sustainable change in practice.

What can we do?

With a strong team of anthropologists, ethnologists and sociologists, we have a solid methodological toolbox that we develop and adapt to the specific initiative. We facilitate user involvement, uncover attitudes and actions, evaluate effects, test new solutions and translate insights into tools.

NORION also uses behavioural design to promote sustainable behaviour. We know that when we change significant elements of a person's use situation, their behaviour in that situation will also change. Our starting point is therefore that we need to test new solutions in practice to see if they work as intended, and that we need to adapt the solution until we achieve the optimal sustainable behavioural change.

NORION behavioural studies can result in many types of deliverables; from analyses, recommendations and evaluations to campaigns, strategies and products.

What have we done?

NORION's specialists have implemented a wide range of projects that promote sustainable behaviour. Below we have selected 3 concrete examples of approaches and results:

  • We have investigated what it takes to prevent littering in nature and urban areas. In a project for the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, NORION mapped waste volumes and causes as well as rationales behind littering. The survey also included an analysis of effective campaigns and methods as well as a behavioural study. Our behavioural study showed, among other things, that citizens distinguish between 'throwing waste' and 'leaving objects'. Many don't think it counts as littering if you put the item neatly on a bench or next to a rubbish bin. The outcome of the project was insight into how information campaigns can have the greatest possible positive and lasting effect, as well as knowledge on how to create behavioural change in the long term.

  • We have investigated how the company EAT GRIM can create the most optimal ordering system for "ugly" Class II vegetables that takes into account the needs of the entire value chain in practice. The study is based on interviews with primary producers and professional kitchens as well as observations of the kitchens' use of Class II vegetables in practice, quantitative data analyses and test runs. The project results in a B2B ordering platform for Class II vegetables.

  • We have investigated how young people's sustainable behaviour can be promoted in vulnerable neighbourhoods through leisure job training. In a project collaboration with FRAK and Urbanplanen, NORION facilitates an extensive involvement process where young people develop new types of leisure jobs that promote the SDGs. We test the new types of after-school jobs in practice and evaluate the effect that knowledge about the SDGs has on young people's attitudes and behaviour in relation to sustainability. The project results in new insights in the field and 3-5 tested and economically viable models for sustainable after-school jobs that can be scaled to municipalities, disadvantaged neighbourhoods and companies.
