Circular economy
The circular economy breaks the current 'buy, use and throw away' culture, which is both resource-intensive and emits significant amounts of CO2. The circular economy offers a more sustainable model where resources are recycled in our society at the highest possible value while producing less waste. Circular economy is also about designing for longevity, reusing, sorting and treating waste in an intelligent and resource-efficient way.
At NORION, we work with circular economy in practice. The circular economy offers unprecedented opportunities for businesses through reduced production costs, stable production inputs, competitive advantages and the development of innovation and new business ideas. With an innovative and co-developing approach, we help companies realise these opportunities and help the public sector support the circular transition.
What can we do?
NORION has the toolbox, knowledge and experience of how circular economy is realised and supported in practice. NORION has an organisational and technical approach that ensures that the company or organisation's competencies are developed and employees are supported in the change that the circular economy requires. NORION has knowledge of the typical challenges and waste regulation that companies sometimes experience as a barrier in working with the circular economy.
NORION also has extensive experience in mapping resource flows and life cycle screening, as well as preparing analyses that create the knowledge base for selecting and prioritising focus areas.

What have we done?
NORION has been working intensively with circular economy projects for the past decade, including:

Assisted Beyond Coffee in developing and demonstrating a circular business model for high-quality protein powder grown in coffee grounds (MUDP funding)

Performed a life cycle analysis of the environmental impact of beer kegs (Sustainable Bottom Line funds)

- Helped Houdini develop a product-as-a-service business model for their outdoor clothing (Re:Source funding)

- Supported more than ten companies in developing and implementing circular business models (CØSMV pool, funds from the Danish Business Authority)

- Assisted public authorities across Europe in mapping the cycles of different waste fractions - such as textiles, WEEE, food waste and plastics: Where does the waste originate and where does it end up? NORION's work with the waste sector means that we have in-depth knowledge of the sector as well as specific fractions (Danish and Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency, City of Copenhagen, Nordic Council of Ministers)
- Advised on public circular procurement as the former secretariat of the Green Procurement Forum, and as advisors in the Green Procurement Travel Team, we support and guide how public procurers can set circular requirements in their tenders (Danish EPA)
- Mapping indicators and international experiences that can be used to measure and monitor circular development. Circular indicators can be used at product, company, municipal and national level (Nordic Council of Ministers, Danish Business Authority)
- Analysed and assessed how recycling can be measured across the EU (EU Commission).
- Contributed to an analysis on sorting different waste fractions.
- Developed a guide and case catalogue on how Nordic municipalities can support the circular economy through the different municipal roles including; business development, green public procurement, building and construction, waste and resources (Nordic Council of Ministers)
- Investigated how regulation and legislation affect industrial symbioses and how municipalities in particular can work with industrial symbioses (Baltic Industrial Symbiosis Project, BIS)
- Mapped opportunities and barriers for certification of recycled products (Danish Business Authority).
