Green Claims

The Green Claims Directive introduces stricter requirements for marketing using environmental claims. For companies focused on green transition, the directive presents an opportunity to strengthen credibility through transparent and well-documented communication.

We support your business in navigating the new requirements, building robust documentation, and ensuring your green messages meet the directive’s standards.

What Is the Green Claims Directive?

The directive aims to regulate how companies communicate their sustainability efforts, with the purpose of protecting consumers and promoting genuinely sustainable choices. Ultimately, it seeks to combat greenwashing and strengthen consumer protection and trust in businesses.

The Green Claims Directive sets out several requirements for companies wishing to market their green initiatives to consumers, including:

  • Companies must be able to substantiate their claims with data and verifiable facts.
  • Communication about green initiatives must be clear and not misleading, using simple and precise wording so that messages are easy for consumers to understand.
  • If comparing your product to others, the comparison must be fair and based on equivalent data.
  • You may only use environmental certifications if they are based on third-party verification schemes or established by public authorities, particularly when making claims about products' climate or sustainability impacts.

At Norion, we advise your business on assessing whether your current marketing aligns with the requirements of the EU’s Green Claims Directive. We also provide guidance and suggestions for future marketing efforts, ensuring they are backed by appropriate documentation.
