Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

With a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), you can take a targeted approach to environmental action and strengthen your competitive edge. It provides insight into the key environmental hotspots of your products and services, along with the right documentation to support your green marketing efforts.

At Norion, we specialise in helping businesses develop LCAs for both products and services.

What is an LCA?

An LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) is a decision-making tool that helps assess and analyse the environmental impact of products and services. It provides a detailed overview of how your products or services affect the environment throughout their entire life cycle – from raw material extraction and production to use and disposal. An LCA evaluates the product or service across 18 different environmental impact categories, including climate change, ozone depletion, and acidification. This offers a far broader picture of environmental impact and can provide valuable insights into which stages of your life cycle have the most significant environmental hotspots, documenting the environmental impact of your products and services, and comparing environmental impact across different products, services, and industries.

Is it relevant for you?

Is it Relevant for You? The ability to provide the right sustainability documentation is now a competitive factor that businesses can no longer ignore. An LCA can give you a competitive edge and can be used to:

  • Document environmental impact
  • Improve product design and reduce environmental footprint
  • Comply with legal and market requirements (e.g. ESG, CSRD, Green Claims)
  • Make sustainability concrete and measurable
  • Communicate your sustainability efforts clearly
  • Gain insight into key environmental hotspots in your products and services
  • Benchmark against similar products on the market

Our LCA services

At Norion, we offer a wide range of LCA-related services – here are descriptions of the most common ones:

LCA-screening

If you need a general overview of the environmental impact of your products, our LCA screening is the ideal choice. This type of assessment provides a solid foundation for identifying key areas with potential for improvement within your product life cycle.

Product Carbon Footprint

Unlike a full LCA, a PCF focuses solely on the CO2e footprint of your product’s life cycle. We follow the ISO 14067 standard as guidance for the assessment. If the results are intended for external communication, third-party verification may be relevant.

Environmental Product Declaration

An EPD is the most widely used type of sustainability documentation in the construction industry. It is an independently verified LCA that allows you to communicate the environmental performance of your products to customers, partners, and regulatory authorities. Additionally, EPDs can be used as documentation in certification schemes such as DGNB.

Full LCA

For companies seeking a complete overview, we offer a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in accordance with international ISO standards (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044). This detailed insight enables you to make well-informed decisions that benefit both your customers and the environment. In addition, it serves as valid documentation for purposes such as green marketing.

Tailored Calculation Tool

Based on one of the various types of LCA, you can have a customised calculation tool developed that:

  • Provides an overview of your product or service
  • Compares with industry averages (e.g. circular vs linear models)
  • Enables estimation of the impact of different scenarios
